Tie 1-1
Today at Taft, our lads in Red earned a very good one one draw against side from Avon Old Farms on a super day up on the hill. Both teams came out battling from the opening whistle, earning good chances against each 'keeper. Taft hit the near post of the Avon goal in the tenth minute but could not get one past Winged Beaver 'keeper. Similarly, Taft goalkeeper Chris Murphy saved a point blank shot from an Avon player who was in the six yard box. Finally, Avon pushed in the first goal of the game as a screaming cross from the right corner was headed in by an Avon substitute, his first touch of the match! Chris had no chance on this goal as it was a cracking shot! The first half ended with Avon ahead one-nil. Both teams were a little more cautious to begin the second half when Taft struck back in the forty ninth minute. Stephen Cho sent a throw from the midline down the right side to an onrushing Joel Edholm. Joel beat the Avon right back, turned the corner and fired a shot far post to even the score at one-one. This was only the fourth goal that Avon has surrendered this year. Both teams had a couple of good chances the rest of the way but could not tally the winning goal. The Taft backline of Cho, Fossland, D'Virgilio, Kennerson and Johnson played very well against large, energetic players in white uniforms. While we would have welcomed a victory, a well-fought draw is certainly acceptable in this case. Our next match is this Saturday at Williston up in Northampton MA at 3PM. Perhaps we'll see you there!
