Boys' Soccer - III

A depleted squad of 13 3rds boys soccer players took a trip to Deerfield today, eking out a draw in a game that was largely dominated by the hosts. The ball was rarely seen outside Taft’s half of the field in the first half, but Deerfield’s attacks proved fruitless and the half ended with no score. The second half opened with more positive play from Taft, and two goals in quick succession put them 2-0 up within 5 minutes. The first was created when Liam Shannon picked up the ball on the right wing and passed it in to Lucas Escallon, who kept the ball moving across the box to an unmarked Cal Dayton for the finish. A minute later, a corner from Shannon was punched out by the Deerfield ‘keeper, but only as far as Casey Gan who buried it in the back of the net. As the second half progressed, the Taft boys visibly tired while the larger Deerfield squad was able to bring in fresher legs. A well taken free kick around the 24 minute mark gave the Taft goalie no chance, and two minutes later Deerfield got a second goal from goal-mouth scramble. For the last fifteen minutes a drained Taft side worked extremely hard in the afternoon heat to hold on for the tie.
