Taft took to the road for the first time this season on Saturday to take on Berkshire for the second time in a week. Just a week ago Taft scrimmaged the Bears in Sheffield in their annual Play Day. Taft put forth their best effort of the season and from the opening whistle were adaptive and adept to turn in a 4-0 victory to move to 3-0. Unlike past games when Taft seemed to feel out the game instead of attack it, the Big Red opened the scoring early. Tri-Captain Kristin Manfreda ’18 scored off of a beautiful possession. Taft repossessed the ball, went wing to wing, with Eve Kuitunen ’20 providing the pivotal moment when she was patient, cut to the interior and froze the defense in space. Kuitunen back-heeled to Manfreda who combined with Emilee Adami ’19. Adami would play back to Manfreda in space as the Taft strikers were pinning the back line of Berkshire back. Manfreda would take advantage of Adami’s pass and fire her third goal of the season to the far post. It was a beautiful way to start the day and set to the tone for both teams. Taft would put home two more first-half goals for the best first-half of the young campaign. In her first start of the year, Patience Kum ’21 would net a hat trick. She would score the final three goals for the Rhinos on the trot, 2 in the first and 1 in the second. Her creative ability is hard to contain but she would have some help against Berkshire. In the first, she was on the receiving end of an Adami cross. Kum would finish it adeptly for Adami’s second assist on the day for her fifth point of the season. Fellow Lower Mid Paton Roberts ’21 assisted Kum’s second goal while her third was unassisted off a perfect turn in the box. It was a complete team effort for Taft. The identity and understanding of how Taft would like to play was evident from the first minute. While there is a long way to go, it was a promising step forward. Taft will take to the road for the second time with a long Wednesday travel when they head to Rye, NY to take on Rye Country Day at 4:00 on Wednesday.
