Win 4-0
Taft traveled to Class A foe Deerfield to take on the Big Green. Capping off a great 8-1 week for the Big Red, Taft took control of the game early and did not cede a goal to take a 4-0 win from Deerfield. The atmosphere was energetic on Deerfield's Parents' Weekend. There were games in every direction and Taft looked to get off to another strong start. Despite the hosts starting with the ball, Taft would pin Deerfield into their own half for the first three minutes of the game. The early stages of the game saw Taft not be able to finish one of their several good scoring chances early. Katie Piechnik '18 would need to make a save from inside the 18 against the run of play to keep the score knotted at 0-0. Taft would not be denied for long when Eveliina Kuitunen '20 stepped in to take a corner. Kristin Manfreda '18 would not be denied in her final tilt with Deerfield and headed home the first goal of the game and eventual game-winner. Their next best scoring opportunity game one minute before the halftime whistle. A narrow miss from a Howie cross to winger Halle Wagner '20 in which Wagner had two quality shots saved by the Deerfield netminder meant Taft would not extend their lead to take a 1-0 score in halftime. Taft showed real progress from early-season games by coming out the halftime with renewed focus. Extending her goal-scoring streak to two games, Jamie Howie '18 would add a goal just a minute and a half after halftime. A ball played over the top from Eveliina Kuitunen '20 put Patience Kum '21 behind the D line. The Deerfield goalie came out well to quell the first attack but could not clear the ball outside her 18. Kum collected it, took a touch off the endline and fired a ball to the far post. The goalie again came up with a good play but parried the ball into the six. Howie would not be denied and beat a defender to the ball and shot past two other defenders on the line to put Taft up 2-0. The lead did not distract the visitors as they looked to build on two goals scored. Off a goalie punt was closed down by Leigh Sharpless '18, Kum found herself on the dribble towards the top of the 18. Kum would draw a defender to play the ball to Kuitunen who deftly slid the ball past the keeper for her first goal of the season. For their fourth and final goal, Taft would have their fourth goal-scorer on the day. Kayla Thomas '20 would play a beautiful curving ball land right on the foot of Roberts in full gait. Roberts would hold off her defender as she carried into net and hit home the fourth and final Taft goal on the day. All in Taft uniform contributed on and off the field at Deerfield to earn a true team win. Everyone was eager and determined to play a tough brand of soccer. Taft will look to continue their form as they host Northfield Mount Hermon on Wednesday at Taft.
