Loss 1-3
We had the privilege of playing on Sacred Heart’s brand new beautiful ( and bright blue) water based turf. All the top colleges and programs around the world play on water based turf because it enables players to play hockey at the very highest level. Despite losing the game, this was a beautiful and exciting game of field hockey!. During our warm-up it looked like we were not going to be able to handle the speed of the ball on the pitch but as soon as the first whistle blew we were off and running. CSH scored the first two goals in the first half. CSH had a talented and fast forward who carried the ball down the right sideline with only her left hand on the stick. She drove straight to the endline and dodged our defense and was able to slip it by Phoebe very quickly. It was a really impressive move and shot. Their second goal came off a corner. Cornna Dorr got her stick on the ball at the top of the circle but wasn’t fully able to clear it. CSH had a second chance at the goal and this one was hit hard and accurately. We went into the second half with a mission and we did what we needed to do. Our forwards came back to the ball and connected better on our passes. Our defense played with such tenacity, it was one of the best defensive efforts I have seen. Lauren Hoey had the play of the game when the score was 2-1. A CSH forward made a great move in the circle and beat Phoebe Autio in the net and as the ball was rolling in the cage, Lauren came out of nowhere and made a defensive save on the line with her reverse stick! Corinna, Lauren, Amelia Allen, and Emma Hentemann were incredible on defense today. The field was incredibly fast and they pressed us hard on attack yet our defenders did not relent. Asia Rupert, Eva Baurmeister and Abigail Hano got a workout today. They were constantly on the move and the determination that they play with at the end of the game was impressive. The goal we scored was a great team effort. McKinley Karpa, who has been battling injury, carried the ball down the left sideline. She lost it, got it back, lost it again, got it back and found Olivia King inside the circle who made a smart pass up to Eva at the top of the circle. With a quick look up, Eva found Liv Santini on the pads for the tip in. We were fired up and knew we were still in the game. We had a couple of corners in the second half but could not convert unfortunately. With 3 minutes left, CSH got a little lucky and was able to beat Phoebe just inside the post. Phoebe had 24 incredible saves today and the opposing coach was amazed with her abilities. Her first save of the game was a stick save on a lifted shot. Despite the loss, this was a great game and could have gone either way. Sacred Heart is a very talented and strong team. We play Canterbury next away on Friday.
