One of the things Brooklyn, New York has made a name for itself for (among square pizza and thick accents) is the Green Lady. A fixture in the Greenpoint neighborhood, her lime green ensembles, lime green hair, and her lime green-dressed dog are unmistakeable. So, on the sopping wet drive up to Deerfield Academy, the Taft Lady Rhinos were reminded of this essential city character as they were confronted with just as much of the unmissable color: green grass (no doubt maintained by some green dollars), green trees, green uniforms. It was only natural, then, that the Taft squad felt they needed to add a little more color to this rainy Wednesday afternoon. When the first whistle blew, the Rhinos were off, immediately in command of play. 14 minutes in, Ruth Amponsah ’27 lit off an absolute rocket to the upper corner of the Deerfield net, unassisted, and put the Rhinos on the scoreboard. Taft continued to dominate over Deerfield just as easily as a real-life Rhino could dominate, well, a door, and Senior Captain Sofia Lombardo-Varisco scored the second goal of the game for Taft on a rebound after some chaos in the box at 27 minutes. Heading into the second half up two-nil, the Lady Rhinos weren’t new — dare I say, green — to this position. Coach Swift reminded the team to stay hungry for the next 40 minutes. Unfortunately, Deerfield scored two goals early in the second half to tie up the match. Now, everyone knows nothing makes Coach Swift go green in the face more than the thought of losing (well, maybe some par-cooked chicken from Chipotle, too). But, as Michael Scott once said, “green means go: go ahead and stop letting them score.” Taft’s defense took this to heart and shut down Deerfield’s scoring opportunities for the rest of the game. At the 23 minute mark, young Ruthie sent a perfect cross into the box and gave 10th grader Ellie Raveis the green light to make a killer goal. That got Coach Swift’s blood pumping again, and her blood runs RHINO RED! With 5 minutes left in the game, Ruthie set up another teammate, returning 11th grader Seka Slivjanowski, with a beautiful goal of her own, and her first of the season. Forget her Wheaties, she was eating her greens! By the end of the game, the Taft girls added a little green of their own in the form of a new win to their record. What’s more, the Brooklyn references still ran deep on the bus ride home with some square pies from Village Pizza. Final score: 4-2.
