Loss 4-5
The Rhinos took on Deerfield today in an exciting home opener. Both teams came ready for the battle and it was a close match from start to finish with three tie-breakers needed. Deerfield was able to take all three of the tie-breakers and the match with a final score of 5-4. The doubles matches could not have been any closer. At # 3 doubles, Leigh Root and Kira Siebrecht faced seasoned opponents who went on the attack early and they found themselves down 1-4. Both ladies were able to make nice adjustments and this match finished 8-5 for Taft. At #2 doubles, Fran Hough and Kate Zhang also took some time to sort out how to win against their skilled opponents. After going down 2-3, the ladies moved ahead to make it 4-3 and finished out the match 8-5. Great net play and attacking ground strokes made the difference. At #1 doubles, Lily Turner and Maddie Meister also had a slow start against strong opponents, going down 2-3. The ladies made adjustments and took the lead to make it 4-3. This was an exciting match to watch with smart play and strong athleticism from all four ladies. Taft held the lead till 6-5 when DA was able to turn the tides and go up 7-6. Taft tied things up again at 8-8 and played a close tie-breaker but DA was able to close it out at 7-5 in the tie-breaker. The singles took the courts all at the same time and the battle continued!! At #2 singles, Macy Toppan played hard but was not able to match up against her DA opponent and DA tied things up 2-2. DA also took #3 with Regan Brewer working hard for the Rhinos, but not able to win against her skilled opponent. Closely following that match, Taft tied things up again when Leigh Root took #5 singles with a close 6-4,6-4 win. The tie continued when Kate Zhang took #1 singles with a tight 6-4,6-4 win over Ashley Manning but Kira Siebrecht lost her tiebreaker third set 6-10. The final match on court was #6 singles. Rhino, Janse Schoonmaker, took a close first set 7-5 but her opponent battled back and took the second set. Janse jumped to an early lead in the tie-breaker but was unable to finish things out and her opponent won the match at 10-7. What an exciting match! The Rhinos will learn from this experience and keep working in each practice. They look forward to taking on Loomis next Wednesday at home.
