Although physically founded in the 1980s, “Quad Squad” traces its intellectual roots to the 380s (BC) when Plato founded his Academy. With soccer balls, the boys of fourths soccer explore a tension between realms of “being” and “becoming” and, usually, arrive at “being offside” first. With an emphasis on field awareness and footwork, players develop an idea of the Form of Soccer over the course of the fall, and many refine their game through successive levels of soccer at Taft. Overall, a major goal of the program is for players to better appreciate teamwork: as Plato says, “It is impossible to conceive of many without one.”
