Photographs 1998-2008: Caitlin Fitzgerald '90

Caitlin Fitzgerald’s photographs, taken during her travels in Europe, Asia, South America, Australia and the Caribbean attempt to recreate the moments when our environment surprises us, when the feeling of a
strange place somehow resonates with all of our senses.

“The best explanation I can give is that it’s like when you’re swimming underwater, and you come up and open your eyes,” she says. “That sudden vividness is what I want to reproduce in my pictures.”

Using a medium format camera and her Contax range finder, Caitlin seldom focuses on the texture or lighting of a single, central figure. Instead she aims to capture broader scenes suffused with a rich, even light, a technique that allows the viewer to enter and experience the setting as fully as possible.

A successful image, to me, is one that allows the person seeing it to experience the feeling of the moment. I want to allow someone who wasn't there to understand the feeling of a place or an event without words.
