For more than a decade, Taft has offered its own service learning course—a bridge between academic study and hands-on service. Unique in its design, “Service Learning: Non ut Sibi,” currently focuses on literacy. The course includes training as a literacy volunteer and academic instruction in brain development. Once each week, students travel to Carrington Elementary School to put theory into practice as literacy tutors.
In the near future, our service learning course will, for the first time, be open to students from both Taft and Waterbury, creating an opportunity for students to serve together and learn about our society’s most pressing global issues in a local context. The course curriculum is expected to include topics in various fields of science.
