Professional Dancers Perform at Taft: Teacher Sarah Surber in Company
Debra Meyers

The Taft School Music for a While performance series continues Friday, November 22 at 7 pm with a dance concert featuring Tandem Dance Company. The event is free and open to the public; tickets are not required.

Tandem is the resident dance company at Moving Arts Exchange (MAX), a non-profit dance organization based in Great Barrington, MA, dedicated to dance education, performance, and choreography. Their unique and inclusive approach to dance education creates opportunities for trained and untrained dancers on the stage, at local community events, in public spaces, through formal classes, in MAXFlash "flash mobs," site-specific dance and video projects, and collaborations with local artists. As the professional company associated with MAX, Tandem creates original work for and with regional dance artists; Taft Dance Teacher Sarah Surber is a member of the Tandem company.

"After taking a hiatus from performing, I am thrilled to return to the stage with such a fantastic group," says Surber. "Performing is such a rewarding and fulfilling experience, and I am grateful to be able to bring that experience back to Taft to share with my students."

The November 22 performance at Taft opens a full weekend of original dance and film with Tandem and guest choreographer Gina Bashour. The program continues Saturday and Sunday in Great Barrington. The Company will perform on screen and on stage for an inclusive connection through the liminal space—from performer to audience and back again. Five dancers, including Surber, will guide the audience through an immersive experience featuring a crazy carousel with coats hanging from the ceiling and dancers from trees. Tandem Co-Director Ellen Gorman will return to Taft this winter to recreate a piece from this show for Taft's Dance Ensemble; the piece will be performed on February 14th and 15th.

The November 22 concert at Taft School takes place in Bingham Auditorium, 110 Woodbury Road, Watertown, CT. For additional information, visit taftschool.org/concerts. For information about Tandem's other events, visit movingartsx.org/tandem-dance-co
