Elspeth Michaels '05 Awarded Joel Gay Creative Fellowship

Congratulations to Elspeth Michaels ’05, a winner of the inaugural Joel Gay Creative Fellowship. Elspeth was one of three winners selected from a pool of more than 1,500 applicants. Established by professor, editor, social commentator and New York Times bestselling author Roxane Gay (and in partnership with Substack), the Joel Gay Creative Fellowships support emerging writers over the course of the year as they develop and publish a newsletter on the Substack platform. Fellows will receive a substantial stipend, as well as services from Substack, including editorial support, design assistance, access to Getty Images, Substack Defender, and other business support services. Roxane Gay will meet with fellows once a month over the course of the year to provide mentorship on both craft and navigating the business of writing.

Elspeth’s newsletter, The Drip, is, she writes, “the sweet, gooey center at the intersection of hip hop and art history. These worlds are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they overlap in ways that amplify cultural perspectives, social movements, and personal memoirs. Exploring art history and hip hop together creates opportunities to highlight patterns of expression and challenge established ways of interpretation.”
