Meet Mr. Aspholm

Where are you from and what brought you to Taft?
I grew up in Minneapolis, attended Brown, and came to Taft to be part of the Penn Fellows program. I loved the institutional commitment to excellence in the classroom, extracurricular activities, and development of the "whole person" that Mr. Taft articulated when he founded the school.

What do you love most about teaching?
I love helping students learn new things, engage in meaningful discourse, unpack complex topics, and express themselves effectively. Students in the Honors History courses write research papers each term and I often beam with pride reading them. The students work hard to apply the skills they've developed over the term and produce work that celebrates both their curiosity and engagement in the learning process.

Outside of the classroom, what have you been involved at Taft?
This is my fourth year as the Boys’ Crew Head Coach, which has been a lot of fun. I love my role as an Upper Mid Class Dean, which allows me to work with students holistically and help them articulate and accomplish their goals. Supporting students outside of the classroom is a great part of the work I do at Taft.

What is your favorite spot on campus?
The Belcher Reading Room in the library is my favorite place on campus. The south-facing windows, high ceilings, and welcoming space make it a wonderful place to do work and bring a group of students to produce research and write their end-of-term papers.

What is one piece of advice you’d give new or prospective Taft students?
Taft is filled with students and adults who enjoy making connections and developing meaningful relationships. The relationships among members of the community are part of what makes Taft a special place to learn and grow; take advantage!

What does it mean to be a member of the Taft community?
Taft is an intentional community of life-long learners who inspire and support each other in pursuit of excellence in all areas of life. The faculty are committed to the mission of educating the whole student, something I take seriously, and it is reflected in the culture we cultivate.
